ISLANDS, QUEENSLAND

3 of the most beautiful islands in Queensland

21 December 2021

We often get asked our favourite spots in ALL of Australia. But it’s near impossible to hand pick the best spots across the whole country. Australia is just SO big. It’s almost 4000km wide from east to west, and ~3860km long from north to south.

From Sydney, it’s quicker to get to New Zealand than it is to get to Perth 😲

From Perth, it’s quicker to get to Bali than it is to get to Sydney 🤯

Australia. Is. HUGE (🍆x4000km 😂)

Also, Australia has such varied landscapes that to pick a few favourite spots would just leave you missing out on all the unique epicness Australia has to offer.

So we’ve decided to break it down state by state.

Starting with Queensland 🤗

More specifically, island life in Queensland.

If Island life is your thing, Queensland is for sure the state to be.

So here are our 3 favourite islands in Queensland.

1. K'gari (Fraser Island)

The original name for Fraser Island is K’gari.

And do you know what K’gari means?

Paradise.

Legit, the island is known as paradise.

To get around K’gari, you’ll need a 4WD. You can either bring your own 4WD over on the barge, rent one or come with an organised tour. You’ll be 4WDing all along the coastline from the second you arrive on the island. You’ll also get to drive through lush forestland to get to all the magical spots the island has to offer. Like Lake McKenzie (pictured above – with Charlie in his speedos 😉).

Fun fact of our vanlife trip – we almost skipped K’gari.

At the time, Charlie wanted to get up to North Queensland ASAP, because we were “running behind on schedule” (to this day I still don’t know what he meant because we legit had no job, no plan, and an open-ended trip 😂). But I noticed Fraser Island on the map, and had heard good things.

So I looked on www.helpx.net (our go-to website for volunteering in exchange for accommodation while traveling) and we ended up finding 10 days of house-keeping in exchange for accommodation on Fraser Island.

Charlie: “10 days 😲?!?!”

Michael: “We can always leave early if we want to – North Queensland will still be there don’t worry 🙄“.

And now…

It has been one of the highlight’s of our trips, by far. Charlie always talks about going back, and how grateful he is that I made him go.

Moral of the story: always force your partner to do things they don’t want to do 😅

2. Hinchinbrook Island

Hinchinbrook Island

If you love multi-day hiking across untouched wilderness, Hinchinbrook is for you.

From the moment you arrive on Hinchinbrook Island, you feel like you’ve entered Jurassic Park. It’s absolutely incredible.

When we polled 3,000 people on our IG account about their favourite spots in Australia, only 2 people mentioned Hinchinbrook. TWO?!

At first we were like WTF?! Who are you people?!

But then it made sense. Hinchinbrook is UNTOUCHED. Not many people go there.

It turns out only 2 people that follow us had mentioned they’d ever been!

You have to schedule Hinchinbrook up to 2 years in advance at times, because only ~40 hikers are allowed on the island hiking at a time! The only reason we got in when we did… was because of COVID cancellations…

We were lucky enough to experience it. So written a blog with more information about Hinchinbrook here: Hinchinbrook blog.

3. Magnetic Island

If you were to ask me to close my eyes and imagine what paradise would look like – Magnetic Island is it.

It’s super remote.

Super relaxing.

There are loads of hiking opportunities.

Loads of camping opportunities.

Loads of beautiful beautiful beaches including our favourite nudie beach in all of Australia – Balding Bay.

Loads of cute little animals on the island, including koalas, kangaroos, and rock wallabies (my fave).

Everything is ~10minutes away by transport.

The people are super friendly. And, in our experience, super LGBT+ friendly.

So of course it made the list.

Charlie plans to bring his entire family to Magnetic Island for a family vacay in a few years – that’s how good it is.

Who’s going to visit one of these islands in the future? We’d love to know!
