17 best nude beaches in Australia

Updated 31 July 2022

Want to know the best nude beaches in Australia? Well, you’ve come to the right blog.

Charlie and I both HATED getting naked in public a few years ago. We were brought up believing that being nude in public was like some sort of precursor to homelessness, sexual deviance or mental health issues (thanks conversative family!).

In Japan in 2017, we lived with a Japanese family who absolutely love going to Onsen (the bathhouses where you get naked…. all together as a family!).

Whenever we asked our Japanese ‘mother’ what she wanted to do, she would get super excited and squeal: “Onsen, Onsen!” She was the cutest little thing, so it was hard to say no. When we got there, our Japanese ‘father’ would laugh when we took our clothes off and say ‘ohhh you have good body. I am proud of my son!’. In a completely genuine and non-predatory or creepy kinda way.

After Japan, we got pretty comfortable getting our kits off pretty much anywhere. We’ve now travelled Australia by van and have visited the best nude beaches in the country that we are going to share with you here.

Here is our list of the 17 best nude beaches in Australia we’ve visited and got our kits off, listed by state.

Table of Contents

The best nude beach in South Australia

1. Maslin nude beach south of Adelaide

When we mentioned that Balding Bay was our favourite nude beach in Australia, everyone was like “have you been to Maslin nude beach in South Australia?”, “what about Maslin in Adelaide?”, “surely you haven’t seen Maslin gay beach yet!”. And now, after visiting this beach we know why.

It is freaking incredible! In another blog, we’ve shared 7 pictures of Maslin nude beach to show you why it’s the best nude beach in South Australia.

2. Kings Beach, Byron Bay

Byron bay nude beach & gay beach

We spent our actual honeymoon at King’s beach nude beach. It’s our favourite nude beach in New South Wales by far.

The walk to the beach is super lush. King’s beach also has loads of nooks and crannies so you should be able to find a quiet spot with shade. You’ll likely have your own private cove.

It’s one of the best gay beaches in Australia for some decent waves on the East Coast too. So you’ll get a few slaps in!

King’s beach is only a 20min drive south of Byron Bay, you can combine all your Byron activities with a visit to Kings nude beach.

3. Werrong beach, Sydney Royal National Park

We have spent a lot of time visiting Werrong nude beach in New South Wales. It’s only about an hour drive south of Sydney and is one of my favourite beaches in the Sydney area.

When we tried to get back to Werrong nude beach to capture some content though, the walk was closed! So we took this picture instead to show you where the beach is nestled. As soon as we’re back, I’ll update this blog because the beach is incredible from every angle!

One night, Charlie and I even set up and a tent and just watched the stars with no one around. Super dreamy.

4. Cobblers beach, Sydney

There are loads of stunning nude beaches in Sydney. But Cobblers beach takes the nude beach award for me.

The water is super flat at Cobblers most of the time, and the sunsets from here are incredible. So Charlie and I play a lot of sunset frisbee during the summer.

Obelisk nude beach is right next to Cobbler’s so if you’re visiting Cobblers don’t miss Obelisk.

5. Little Congwong, Sydney

If you ask someone who lives in Sydney what their favourite nude beach is in Sydney Australia, you’ll likely hear Little Congwong. It is such a popular nude beach in Sydney and for good reason. It’s so beautiful, the view is amazing, and the water is pristine.

This is also Charlie’s number one Sydney beach.

You can even snorkel around the rocks shown where I’m sitting!

6. Moon Bay, Sapphire Coast

We were blown away by the Sapphire Coast in South NSW. It gets it’s names for it’s incredible turquoise waters. This is one of our favourite nude beaches in NSW for sure!

7. Armands Bay, Sapphire Coast

This is a tucked away cute nude beach near Bermagui. You’re likely to find you have the beach all to yourselves like we did. Make sure to check our Blue Pool Bermagui beforehand. It’s rated the best ocean pool in Australia!

The best nude beaches in Victoria, Australia

Looking for the best nude beaches in Victoria and the best nude beaches near Melbourne? Here are our top picks.

8. Sunnyside North Beach

Sunnyside North Beach Nude Gay Beach near Melbourne

Sunnyside North Beach is our favourite nude beach near Melbourne for sure, and just 1 hour drive from the city.

Sunnyside North Beach is situated on a picturesque and secluded stretch of coastline located on the Mornington Peninsula. The beach is accessible by foot via a short track from the car park and is known for its natural beauty, calm waters, and stunning views of Port Phillip Bay.

9. Southside Beach

Southside Beach, located in Frankston, is our favourite nude beach on the Great Ocean Road and another great option for those looking for a nude beach near Melbourne (1 hour’s drive). It’s a quiet and secluded beach with some really cool hikes in the area. Note you will find a few tourists fully clothed walking along the beach too.

10. Point Impossible Beach

Point Impossible Nude Gay Beach Near Melbourne Victoria

Another favorite of ours is Point Impossible Beach, which is located on the Great Ocean Road, about an hour and a half drive from Melbourne. This secluded, clothing-optional beach is known for its beautiful natural surroundings and clear waters. It’s a popular spot for sunbathing, swimming, and surfing, and it’s also a popular destination for the gays. In fact, Point Impossible Beach is one of the best gay beaches near Melbourne.

The best nude beaches in Queensland, Australia

11. Balding Bay, Magnetic Island

If you’re looking for an unofficial nude beach in Queensland, Balding Bay is our number recommendation.

It’s freaking epic, and we would honestly rate this as our favourite nude beach in all of Australia.

It’s quiet. It’s secluded. And the 30 minute walk there is beautiful.

We spent 10 days on Magnetic Island, and 4 of them were at Balding Bay. 3 days we had the beach to ourselves. 1 day we had to share it with 2 other couples that hiked in, but we survived.

12. Turtle Cove Beach Resort, Cairns

Turtle Cove Beach Resort is Australia’s only LGBTQIA+ friendly Adult Resort which has it’s own private nude beach on the property.

We didn’t stay overnight at this nude beach resort, but we did find ourselves going to a random full moon party here and it was so much fun!

13. Alexandria Bay, Noosa

It’s worth mentioning that there aren’t any “offiicial” nude beaches in Queensland. However, that doesn’t stop nudists from exploring and enjoying some of the best beaches that are known to be unofficial nude beaches. Alexandria Bay nude beach in Noosa is one such spot.

One of the reasons it’s so incredible is because the beach is nestled in Noosa National Park, which is absolutely freaking stunning. The walks are so beautiful, and after hiking in the national park, going for a naked dip at Alexandria Bay is literally one of the best feelings ever.

The best nude beaches in Western Australia, Australia

14. Cosy Corner, Margaret River

nude beach Australia

This is definitely the best nude beach in Western Australia for us and one of Australia’s best nude beaches. Cosy Corner is so bloody beautiful, you’ll wonder how places like this even exist.

People say that Australia’s south west is known to lack two things: people, and pollution. So when you get to places like Cosy Corner, you’ll barely see a soul or a piece of plastic around. It’s absolutely incredible.

Charlie’s sister even came to visit us in the Margaret River, and we took her to this nudist beach. She went all the way up the north end, and Charlie and I stayed down south. It was like she wasn’t even there!

15. Mauritius Beach, Exmouth

best gay beach Western Australia

Not many people know about this incredible nude beach in Western Australia.

When you visit the Ningaloo Reef most people think of snorkelling with the Manta Rays and Whale Sharks (for good reason, these experiences are A MUST DO, and we’d recommend doing them over getting naked at Mauritius beach if you’re strapped for time).

However, when you’re done swimming with all the marine wildlife, go let it all hang out and get your cheeks get a little sun-kissed at Mauritius Beach. The colour of the ocean is amazing.

PRO TIP: There’s zero shade though, so take an umbrella.

16. Swanbourne Beach, Perth

If you’re in Perth and looking for a nudist beach to soak up some sun, you’ve got to check out Swanbourne nude beach. This stunning stretch of coastline is known as one of the best nude beaches in Perth, and it’s the best, if only, gay beach in Perth. Make sure to go early morning before the wind picks up, and we 100% recommend grabbing a pizza from Canteen and watching the sunset at Cottlesloe at the end of the day.

17. Whaling Cove, Albany

Albany’s best nude beach feels like you’ve been stranded on a tropical island even though you’re super close to the city.

There’s a 2-3 hour walk called Possession Point next to Whaling Cove, which we’d totally recommend doing. You should spend the morning hiking Possession Point, and then let it all hang out at Whaling Cove for the rest of the afternoon. That was one of our best days in Albany.
