Best gay movies of all time - true stories
1. Pride (2014)
Pride is truly one of the best gay movies of all time for us. It will give you such great insights into what being a part of the LGBTQ+ community is all about. And what the ethos behind Pride actually is.
It’s based on a true story about LGBTQ+ activists who raise money to help struggling families affected by the Miners Strike in the UK in 1984. It’s a “historical-comedy/drama” and has actual laugh out loud moments too.
But most importantly, the story will stay with you forever. You can read more about this true story here.
The below image is from one of our favourite scenes in the movie. Please watch it, you’ll thank us later.
2. Holding the Man (2015)
This has to be one of the best gay movies ever made, purely because it’s a true story and memoir of the life of the main characters. If it doesn’t touch your soul by the end of it, you don’t have one.
Set in Australia in the 70s and 80s, Holding the Man is a gay love story about Tim and John, two high-school sweethearts who fall in love and share a life together. One gets ill, and I won’t ruin the rest for you, but you’ll be needing the Kleenex at the end.
It’s pretty old school and not very fast paced, but it’s still 100% worth watching.

3. BPM (Beats Per Minute) - French
You have to watch this best gay movie of all time at least once in your life.
BPM (Beats Per Minute) is set in the 90s and is a French drama film about a group of people in the queer community fighting to be recognised as humans during the AID crisis in Paris.
Just watch it. Charlie says you will not be disappointed.
And don’t forget the Kleenex.

4. Uncle Frank (2020)
When I decided to write this blog, this was the first movie that I knew I was going to include on it. Uncle Frank has to be one of the most wholesome best gay movies of all time we are including on this blog.
The plot: gay guy moves to the big city from a small country town to get away from his conservative family and live a life where he could be more his authentic self. When his uncle dies though, he has to go back to his small country town and visit his family members… with his partner.
It’s such a beautiful movie and one that will be on the top of my ‘best gay movies of all-time’ list forever.
5. The Hours (2002)
A few of our Instagram followers recommended we read The Hours before watching the movie based on the book. Then I found out that the movie had Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman and Clare Danes. I was like okay sh*t, there’s no way I can wait until I finish the book to watch this gay movie on Netflix.
It follows three different women at three different time points, all connected by their emotions and a book they’re reading.
All I can say is: you have to watch this best gay movie.
Best gay coming of age movies
6. Love Simon (2018)
7. Call Me By Your Name (2017)
This movie is such a timeless gay coming of age movie. If a book is made into a movie, it’s usually pretty freaking good.
Call Me By Your Name captures the essence of what it’s like to be young and in love. It’s set in the beautiful Italian Riveira – such nice scenery to visualise gay romance blossoming.
Charlie is one of those people that sometimes watches a movie and just doesn’t feel anything even if it’s super sad. After this movie though, he actually left the cinema and asked if it was okay for him to walk home alone so he could contemplate what he just watched. I was like wtf, did Call Me By Your Name break my husband?!
