Gays That Travel

How to find the most epic gay-welcoming spots in Australia.

1 December 2021

If you’re reading this blog or following us on Instagram (@husbands.thattravel), chances are you’re probably part of the LGBTQ+ community.

Or you’re our RL besties.

Or you love travelling.

Or you accidentally clicked a link that led you here 🤣

Either way, we wanted you to know that one of the main reasons we started Gays That Travel and why it would be epic for you to stick around and follow our adventures here.

So… let’s backtrack a bit…

Charlie and I are both super into traveling, and we’ve travelled the world together for the past 5 years (and been traveling separately for the past decade)! We’ve seen SO many cool countries.

Like India.

Taiwan.

New Zealand.

Morocco.

Norway.

Slovenia.

Japan.

Even (South) Korea!

See below yo.

A lot of the time though, we aren’t really sure if a place is going to be gay-safe, gay-tolerant, gay-friendly, or gay-welcoming. They might all sound similar, but they aren’t.

Gay-friendly vs. gay-welcoming.

Gay-safe = will we be stabbed or bashed if we held hands in public 😢

Gay-tolerant = will we be frowned upon but not disturbed if we held hands in public. In Japan, we didn’t know if people would look at us weirdly if we kissed in public (it turns out that the Japanese aren’t very PDA friendly in general, so it wasn’t just the gays but all affectionate beings they frowned upon – so pretty affectionate-tolerant 😅)

Gay-friendly = will we be smiled at but not really welcomed or understood if we held hands in public.

Gay-welcoming = will we be celebrated and understood because love is love and love is awesome if we held hands in public (like the kind of welcoming you get from your dog when you come home after a long trip 😁).

See, there’s a difference. A pretty big one!

If you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community and have travelled, I’m sure you’ve wondered whether a place is gay-safe, gay-tolerant, gay-friendly or gay-welcoming too.

Which is why we’ve started Gays That Travel – to be on the lookout and share with you the real, true, 100% gay WELCOMING spots all across the globe (#soproud)

And there’s honestly no better country to start this mission in than Australia!

Is it safe to travel Australia if you’re gay?

100-1000000% yes.

Absolutely.

Of course, we can’t promise that every single person in the country is super progressive and will welcome you into their home after seeing your little gay face (although wouldn’t that be nice 🤣).

What we can tell you that we’ve been travelling by van across Australia for 1 year now, and we’ve felt incredibly safe in most of the places we’ve travelled.

(One exception is Fitzroy Crossing. Pro Tip: never stay overnight in Fitzroy Crossing no matter what your sexuality is)

We’ve also come across LOADDSSSS of gay-friendly places too. Majority of the places are to be honest #goaustralia.

But the gold is where the gay-welcoming experiences are, and we’re here to share those with you.

So how do you find the most epic gay-welcoming spots and experiences of Australia?

You stick around with us! We’re going to be creating so much content about the most beautiful spots we’ve visited in all of Australia, AS WELL AS the most gay-welcoming experiences we’ve had. When we write a new blog, we’ll almost always make reference to how gay-welcoming a place or experience is.

If you ever plan on travelling Australia, whether by van, car, plane, or foot (I don’t joke, we’ve met people that have walked all over Australia), our website will be such a great resource to help you feel even more welcome in this amazing country too.

Let us know in the comments if this is something you’re excited about, and if there’s anything in particular you’d like to know more about!

That’s what we’re here for 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️

Until next time 👋

Michael (and Charlie – he doesn’t write these things but he’s here next to me sleeping 😴).
