You Won't Believe Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake is actually real.

30 September 2022

Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake in Western Australia is one of the most magical places we’ve visited in the entire country.

It’s located 6 hours north of Perth, or only 30-45mins south of Kalbarri.

Check out our pictures of Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake to make your jaw drop and wonder how places like this even exist.

Why is Hutt Lagoon pink?

As soon as we drove next to Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake, we were like wtf? How is this possible?

It turns out the lake has microscopic algae and bacteria that contain loads of beta-carotene (the substance that makes pumpkins and carrots orange). The beta-carotene gives the lake its vibrant pink hue #science.

So we hopped out of the van to take a closer look, before googling whether or not we could swim in it.

Is it safe to swim in Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake?

It’s generally accepted as safe to swim in Hutt Lagoon, and after swimming Charlie’s skin has yet to melt off (which is great).

It’s worth noting that the bottom of the lake is lined with loads of salt crystals that are super sharp, so if you’ve got petite feet like me, keep that in mind.

The idea of salt, bacteria and algae that makes water turn pink also makes some people go ‘ew’ (me), but it doesn’t stop others from wanting to capture the magic with a pic in the pink (Charlie)!

Because of the huge concentration of salt in its water Charlie floated like a little baby flamingo for the first. time. ever!

This was super exciting for Charlie. He’s NEVER been able to float in a body of water before (his legs are just too muscular #yum), and usually complains when I’m floating about doing my thang #floatandgloat.

But at Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake, you can’t sink in the pink (I hope you get this reference?!).

What else can you do at Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake?

Relax.

It is the best part of this lake. It wasn’t too crowded when we visited and it’s super unlikely you’ll ever visit a spot like this again.

From our perspective, just drive around the lake and find a quiet spot to sit back, relax, and soak up the pinkness.

That’s exactly what we did: found a quiet spot, parked the van, and sunbathed with a good book.
