Best beaches in Esperance that will blow your mind

18 May 2022

Who knew that some of the best beaches of Australia would be found in Esperance? Not us, until we went there ourselves.

Australia has thousands of incredible beaches along it’s coastline. For beach lovers like us, the country is pretty much paradise.

When we decided to travel Australia by van, we knew we’d be making a list of our favourite beaches to share with you. This blog will walk you through all of the best beaches in Esperance, and guess what? It even has a nude beach included.

First though, you’ll find answers to our frequently asked questions about Esperance.

FAQ: Esperance Beaches, Australia

We’ve answered some key questions to help you get an idea of what to expect when you visit. Read on for the answers or skip to the best beaches in Esperance.

Can you swim in Esperance?

You can totally swim in Esperance. The water temperature is a lot cooler than other well-known beaches in Australia however. That doesn’t phase Charlie as much as it phases me. He’s all for cold swimming!

It’s worth keeping in mind that sharks tend to visit the area, so make sure the water is shark-free before you go for a dip.

Cyril Avery is not a real Avery — or at least, that’s what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn’t a real Avery, then who is he?

Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead. At the mercy of fortune and coincidence, he will spend a lifetime coming to know himself and where he came from – and over his many years, will struggle to discover an identity, a home, a country, and much more.

In this, Boyne’s most transcendent work to date, we are shown the story of Ireland from the 1940s to today through the eyes of one ordinary man. The Heart’s Invisible Furies is a novel to make you laugh and cry while reminding us all of the redemptive power of the human spirit.

Is Esperance worth visiting?

Best Beaches in Esperance - Cape Le Grande NP

If you love beaches like us, Esperance is honestly worth visiting more than any other place in Australia in our opinion. Hands down. The beaches are incredibly beautiful. Our YouTube video on Esperance was our most watched clip to date, and we thank the beaches for that. If you’ve seen it you’ll know why.

What is the best time to visit Esperance?

The best months to visit Esperance are January to April or October to December. At these times of year, you’re likely to have good weather, with temperatures being between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius (68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit). We went in April and had plenty of sunny days.

What is Esperance known for?

Esperance is known for having some of the whitest sand beaches in all of Australia. The white sand contrasted against the turquoise blue ocean is what makes Esperance beaches so incredibly pretty. The beaches are way more secluded than other parts of the country, so it’s likely you won’t be sharing them with other people.

Why is the sand so white in Esperance?

The sand is so white in Esperance as the sand comes from local sandstone. Over time, this has weathered, forming super fine, frosted grains of sand.

People say that Hymn’s Beach in Jervis Bay is the whitest sand in the world. We’ve been to both, and that’s just not true. The sand in Esperance is pure white magic.

The best Esperance beaches

1. Wharton Beach - Cape Le Grand National Park, Esperance

Charlie, his sister Emma and I spent the entire day at Wharton Beach. Literally from sun-up to sun-down.

It was the first beach we visited in Esperance, and we were blown away. We found a quiet spot, got out our pack of cards, and the just day flew by. If you could free camp at Wharton Beach, we totally would have.

If you love surfing, Wharton beach is a great spot to get your board out. It’s the perfect spot for beginners as the waves usually aren’t too rough.

2. Thistle Cove - Cape Le Grand National Park, Esperance

Best Beaches in Esperance - Thistle Cove

Thistle Cove has a soft spot in my little gay heart and was one of my favourite beaches in Esperance. When I get to a beautiful beach and there is no one else around, I feel at one with nature.

That’s exactly what happened at Thistle Cove. We walked the entire stretch of the beach and didn’t spot a single soul. We did see a seagull absolutely annihilate a fish though. See, at one with nature!

3. Twilight Cove - Esperance

Best Beaches in Esperance - Twilight Cove

We spent a few days at Twilight Cove, as it’s a short 10-minute drive from the centre of Esperance. There’s even an ice cream truck in the parking lot that kept Charlie well fed and less hangry.

The water at Twilight beach is freaking perfect too. It’s so calm that you can swim out to the rock usually. We got our inflatable boat out to reach the rock instead of swimming, because Charlie was afraid of sharks.

If you’re looking for an overnight camping spot near Twilight Cove, we’d recommend Esperance Bay Holiday Park.

4. Hellfire Bay - Cape Le Grand National Park, Esperance

Best Beaches in Esperance - Hellfire

If you’ve seen our YouTube video on Esperance, you know the epic footage we captured of this beach. Hellfire Bay has got to be one of the most amazing beaches we’ve ever visited. I’m going to let you see for yourself in our YouTube video below.

5. Little Hellfire Bay - Cape Le Grand National Park, Esperance

Best Beaches In Esperance - Little Hellfire

When  ‘little’ is the adjective of the beach, it usually means the beach is more remote, rugged and harder to get to. By harder to get to, we mean it involves walking 20 minutes or more. It seems tourists and probably even locals hate having to walk far to a beach in Australia since you’re so spoilt for choice. We love trekking to a beach though, because then there’s usually no one around.

6. Lucky Bay - Cape Le Grand National Park, Esperance

best beaches in Esperance - Lucky Bay

This spot is not only renown for being one of Esperance’s best beaches, but also for having Kangaroos that hang around on the sand. They are super tame and enjoy your company! Not only that, but you can also drive your vehicle onto Lucky Bay, which is one of Charlies favourite things to do!

7. 11-Mile Beach - Esperance

nude beach Esperance

There’s a 9-mile, 10-mile, and 11-mile beach in Esperance. But the reason we’ve listed the latter as one of Esperance’s best beaches is because it’s another freaking beautiful nude beach in Australia!

We had no idea a nudie beach existed in Esperance when we arrived, so it was a pleasant surprise. Freeeedoooom!
